The Two Steeds of Othinn (Odin)

The pattern on an ancient Swedish runestone was the spark of inspiration for this shirt, as I began to see a tree-like shape in the carving. The front design shows the World Tree that binds the Viking universe and supports all life. Roots gnawed by the serpent, branches nibbled by deer, leaves crowned by eagles, the Tree was known as Yggdrasill, the steed of Ygg, Ygg being one of the names of Othinn.

The Father of the gods hung on the World Tree to gain knowledge of the runes, as is told in Old Norse in the poem Havamal – The Words of the High One. This is quoted here in runes, translating as:

“I know that I hung on a windswept tree for nine whole nights, wounded with spear and given to Othinn, myself to myself. No one knows from where the roots of that tree spring”.

The back design comes from two picture stones from Gotland, which show Othinn mounted on the eight-legged horse Sleipnir. This is the inspiration for my depiction of the All Father. Sleipnir bore the Terrible One on his journeys between the worlds, accompanied by the ravens Huginn and Muninn.

The shirts are the highest quality grade T-shirt, Gildan Ultra, black with a very pale grey design, printed by hand in England
