Strap end brooches are a historically-correct, lighter alternative to tortoise brooches. The originals of this small pair in Jelling style were found in Birka in Sweden, dating from the 10th century.

The story of strap end brooches is a fascinating example of how the Vikings connected to the outside world.

The idea for making this type of brooch originated when the Vikings went plundering in the Frankish lands. The Franks wore large ornate strap ends on their belts which were eagerly gathered by Vikings. When they returned home they needed to offer exotic treasures to their womenfolk. These flashy strap ends – once a pin had been put on the back – made perfect gifts!

The idea caught on, and Viking craftsmen then began to make their own brooches in this unusual shape. They could then be worn in pairs (although they were used singly as well).

Strap end brooches have been found in Denmark, Norway, Sweden ,Iceland and Germany.

My copies are of a particularly fine example with two entwined Jelling style dragons. They have strong pins and hanging loops for beads.

      Price is for the pair.

      Beautiful

I bought a set of the bronze brooches a couple of years ago at a market.
It was my first bigger purchase for my viking gear. Really love the design and the clasp on the back is very secure.

      Thank you Renske

      Perfect

Beautifully made with details. You can really see the craftsmanship in these. Own a pair that I use all the time. Good strong pin on the back too!
      Love them!

      Thanks Jessica.

So Good I've Bought Two Sets

These were the first brooches which I ever bought for reenactment back in 2013, and they're still going strong. The pins on these are thick and strong, and have held my heavy dress and adornments through season after season, including daily wear at a Living History site where I was constantly having to unfasten them to show to tourists. The craftsmanship in the pin alone sets them apart.

Not to say that the cast itself isn't amazing, because it is. There is a cleanness to all of Alban's casts which have made him the only person I recommend to people looking to replicate middle to high status clothing. Infact, it was so good that I returned to him years later to purchase another set in silver for my wedding dress.

      Thank you so much Rain.
